    The method

How profit is built, step by step

A forex profit is a chain of four steps. First the price moves. Dividing that move by the pip size gives the pips. Pips times the value of a pip for your lots gives the profit in the currency the pair is priced in. Finally that amount is converted into your account currency.

Profit = pips × pip value per lot × lots × conversion ratePip value per lot = pip size × contract size, in the quote currency. Net = profit − commission + swap.

For most pairs a pip is 0.0001, and for pairs with the yen as quote currency it is 0.01. A standard lot is usually 100,000 units, but check the Specification of your symbol: some brokers differ. Many platforms also show a fifth decimal, called a pipette, which is a tenth of a pip.

    Lookup

    What 10 pips are worth

The same 10 pips on one lot pay different amounts depending on the pair and on your account currency. Rates here are round example numbers, not live quotes.

Profit of 10 pips on 1 lot, by pair and account currency
    PairUSD accountEUR accountGBP account
    EURUSD$100.00€92.59£78.74
    GBPUSD$100.00€92.59£78.74
    USDJPY$66.67€61.73£52.49
    USDCHF$112.36€104.04£88.47
    USDCAD$72.99€67.59£57.47
    AUDUSD$100.00€92.59£78.74
    NZDUSD$100.00€92.59£78.74
    EURGBP$127.00€117.59£100.00
    EURJPY$66.67€61.73£52.49
    GBPJPY$66.67€61.73£52.49

For pairs priced in dollars the answer is the same in dollars for every account. For the others, the profit first lands in the quote currency and then goes through a conversion. Our pip value calculator focuses on that one number.

    Which currency

    Where the conversion happens

A trade on EURGBP earns or loses pounds, because the price is in pounds. If your account is in dollars, your broker converts the result into dollars. Most brokers do this at their own rate at the time the trade closes, and the rate you see on a chart may differ from theirs.

That is why the calculator asks for the conversion rate. Use the rate your broker shows you. The example rate it starts with is only there so the page does not stay empty.

    Working backwards

How many pips for a profit target

Choose Target profit above to turn a money target into pips and an exit price. The table shows the idea for a USD account on EURUSD: the smaller the lot, the more pips you need for the same money.

Pips needed on EURUSD with a USD account, before costs
    Lots$100 profit$500 profit$1,000 profit
    0.011,000 pips5,000 pips10,000 pips

If the pips are further than the pair usually moves in the time you plan to hold, the target is not a plan. Compare it with your stop using the risk reward calculator.

    Worked trades

    Four trades you can load

Each loads into the calculator above. The second shows why the account currency matters: the same 50 pips are worth different amounts depending on the pair.

    EURUSD buy, 1.0800 to 1.0850, 1 lot. 50 pips, $500.00 on a USD account.

EURGBP buy, 0.8500 to 0.8550, 1 lot, USD account. The profit is £500.00 in the quote currency and $635.00 after conversion at an example rate of 1.27.

USDJPY sell, 150.00 to 149.20, 0.5 lots, USD account. 80 pips is JPY 40,000, which converts to $266.67 at an example rate.

Target profit: EURUSD buy at 1.0800, 0.5 lots, $250 wanted, commission 7 per lot. Needs 50.7 pips, so the exit price is 1.08507.

    Costs

    What sits outside the price

The spread is already in the prices you traded at, so do not subtract it again. Commission and swap are separate. Commission is usually charged per lot, and swap depends on the pair, the direction and how many nights you hold. Both vary by broker and account type, so use the numbers from your own account.

Our swap calculator and trading cost calculator help you compare them.

Need an account to read real costs from? We have an affiliate link with Exness: if you open an account through it, we earn a commission. Spreads, commission and swap depend on the broker, the account type and your country. This page states no costs for Exness or any other broker, so read them on the account you open.

See the reward before you enter

Lot Architect shows size, margin, risk, reward and R:R as you drag the Entry, SL and TP lines on the chart, so you see the money at stake before you click.

It does not calculate swap or convert currencies, and it does not read prop firm rules. It is our own product, and we earn money if you buy it.

    Questions

    Forex profit calculator FAQ

How do I calculate forex profit?

Multiply the pips by the pip value per lot and by your lots, then convert to your account currency. On EURUSD, 50 pips on 1 lot is 50 × $10 = $500.

How do I calculate profit in pips?

Subtract the entry from the exit price and divide by the pip size, which is 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for yen pairs. For a sell, reverse the sign.

How much is one pip worth?

It depends on the pair, the lot size and your account currency. For one standard lot of a pair priced in dollars it is $10. See the lookup table above for other pairs.

Why is my profit different in a EUR or GBP account?

The profit is first calculated in the quote currency and then converted at your broker rate. A different account currency means a different conversion, so the same trade gives a different number.

Does the calculator include the spread?

The spread is inside the prices you enter, so it is already counted. Commission and swap are separate fields.

    Is the exchange rate live?

No. The starting rate is a made-up example, and the page says so. Enter the rate your broker uses for a real figure.

    Does leverage change my profit?

No. Leverage changes the margin a trade needs, not the profit per pip. Use the margin calculator for that.

Can I use it for gold or indices?

Not here. Gold has its own pip value page, and indices use points rather than pips; see our XAUUSD pip value calculator and index calculator.
