Pip, point, tick

Same gold, three different words

Gold has no universal pip definition. The same price move can be 10 pips on one site and 100 pips on another. Here is how the words are used.

Point

$0.01

The smallest price step on a 2-digit gold symbol. With 3-digit pricing a point is $0.001.

Pip

$0.10

Many traders count 10 points as 1 pip. Some brokers and platforms call the $0.01 step a pip, and you may also see whole dollars used. Always check the definition.

Tick

Tick size

The smallest price change your platform allows. Tick value is what one tick is worth for 1 lot, in your account currency.

The formulas

Pip value = Pip size × Contract size × Lots
Point value = Point size × Contract size × Lots
Tick value = Tick size × Contract size × Lots
Pips in $1 = 1 ÷ Pip size

If your account is not in USD, multiply by the exchange rate (units of your currency per 1 USD).

Value by lot size (100 oz, $0.10 pip)

Lot1 pip1 point$1 move
1.00$10.00$1.00$100
0.10$1.00$0.10$10
0.01$0.10$0.01$1

Which definition does my broker use?

  1. Open Market Watch in MT5 or MT4, right-click XAUUSD and choose Specification.
  2. Read Digits, Contract size, Tick size and Tick value.
  3. Enter them under Broker settings in the calculator. If your tick value matches the math, your settings are right.

Worked example

You trade 0.10 lot with a 35-pip stop-loss, using the $0.10 pip and a 100 oz contract.

35 pips × $0.10 = $3.50 price move
1 pip on 0.10 lot = $0.10 × 100 × 0.10 = $1.00
Loss if stopped = $3.50 × 100 × 0.10 = $35.00

Use it right

Three mistakes that distort pip value

01

Comparing pips across sources

A “50 pip” stop is $5 with one definition and $0.50 with another. Always convert to dollars before you compare.

02

Assuming 100 oz

Most brokers use 100 oz per lot, but not all. A different contract size changes every value on this page.

03

Ignoring account currency

Tick value on your platform is shown in your account currency. On a EUR or GBP account, the USD figure is not what you will see.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much is one pip in gold?
It depends on the pip definition. With the common $0.10 pip and a 100 oz contract, 1 pip is worth $10 on 1 lot, $1 on 0.10 lot and $0.10 on 0.01 lot. If your broker or platform counts $0.01 as a pip, the same lot is worth ten times less per pip.
Is a gold pip $0.10 or $0.01?
Both are used. Gold has no universal pip definition. Many traders count 10 points ($0.10) as one pip, while some platforms and brokers use the smallest price step ($0.01) as the pip or the point. Check your broker’s specification, or set the definition in this calculator.
What is a point in XAUUSD?
A point is the smallest price step on your platform. On a 2-digit gold symbol it is $0.01. Some brokers quote 3 digits, so a point is $0.001.
What are tick size and tick value?
Tick size is the smallest price change the platform allows. Tick value is the money a single tick is worth for 1 lot, shown in your account currency. Formula: tick value = tick size × contract size × exchange rate.
How many pips is a $1 move in gold?
With a $0.10 pip it is 10 pips, and with a $0.01 pip it is 100 pips. In points it is 100 points on a 2-digit symbol.
Why does my broker show a different value?
The usual reasons are a different contract size (not every broker uses 100 oz), a different pip or point definition, 3-digit pricing, or an account that is not in USD. Enter your broker’s tick value in the calculator and it will tell you if it matches.
Where do I find tick value in MT5 or MT4?
Open Market Watch, right-click XAUUSD and choose Specification. You will see Digits, Contract size, Tick size and Tick value for your broker.
Can I use my EUR, GBP or JPY account?
Yes. Choose your account currency and type the exchange rate (how many units of your currency equal 1 USD). Nothing is sent to our servers, and the rate is only used in your browser.
