Partial TP & Scale-out Planner

A partial take profit feels safe. This partial take profit calculator shows what the pieces are really worth: the result in R and in dollars for every way the trade can end, and how it compares with a single target.

  • Up to 4 partial exits
  • Break even after TP1 or TP2
  • Lot split with 0.01 rounding
  • Expected result from your reach rates
Plan your exits ↓

Not a promise: expected results use reach rates you estimate. They are a way to think about the plan, not a forecast, and a stop can fill worse than planned.

Worked example

Gold buy, $300 risk, 50 / 30 / 20 at 1R, 2R, 3R

$510if all three targets hit
$0if TP1 hits and the rest is stopped
−$300if the stop is hit first

Result in R for every way the trade can end

Each bar: price reaches that target, then turns back and the rest of the position is closed at the stop.

The chance of reaching each target is your own estimate, and each must be no higher than the one before. Spread, slippage, swap and commission are not included.

Partial take profit: the trade-off in one table

Scaling out does two things at once. It turns part of the trade into profit early, and it shrinks what is left to run. Whether that helps depends on how often price reaches each level.

Same trade, four exit plans. We give each level a reach rate: 60 percent for 1R, 40 percent for 2R and 25 percent for 3R. Move them on the page and the ranking can change.

Reach rates are held fixed here. In practice, a stop at entry takes you out of trades that would have gone on to 2R or 3R, so the later reach rates fall. That is a cost this table does not show.

Gold buy at 2350, stop 2345, $300 risk (0.60 lot). Expected result in R per trade.

Small positions do not split evenly

Brokers trade in steps of 0.01 lot, so a 50/30/20 split of a small position gets rounded. The first parts are rounded down and the last part takes what is left, which skews the shares. Below 0.03 lot you cannot make three parts at all.

    0.600.300.180.1250/30/20 percent

The planner uses this rule, so its money figures match what a platform would close. Percent partial closes in a trade panel follow their own rounding, so check yours.

Close the pieces with a click

Click Close Manager is our one-click trade panel for MT5 and MT4. When your plan says to take half, you do not hunt through the terminal.

Partial closeCloses a fixed percent of every position. The default is 50 percent and you can change it.
Break evenMoves the stop of profitable trades to entry in one click, with an offset in points.
Close by groupAll, buys only, sells only, winners, losers, or the chart symbol.
ScopeAll positions, one magic number, or manual trades only, plus delete pending orders.

A live panel shows floating profit and loss, the position count and the buy and sell split. Actions ask for confirmation inside the panel, and you can turn that off. Dark and light themes are included.

Honest limits: it acts when you click. It does not run a scale-out plan by itself, open trades or give signals. AutoTrading must be on for it to close or modify orders, and a close at market can fill worse than the price you saw. Test it on a demo account first.

    How the planner works

    • R. One R is the distance from entry to stop. A target at 2R is twice that distance from entry.
    • Position size.risk ÷ (stop distance × contract size), rounded down to 0.01 lot. For USDJPY the yen result is converted at the price of each exit.
    • Parts. Each part closes its share of the lots, rounded down to 0.01. The last part is the remainder, so the parts always add up to the position.
    • Scenario k. Targets 1 to k are hit and closed. The rest of the lots are then closed at the stop, which is the original stop or, after your break-even rule, entry plus the offset.
    • Chance of each scenario. Stopped first is one minus the reach rate of TP1. Ending after target k is the reach rate of k minus the reach rate of k+1. All hit is the reach rate of the last target.
    • Expected result. The sum of each scenario’s result times its chance. An all-in plan at a single target is treated the same way with two outcomes.

    Questions about partial profits

Is taking partial profits better than one target?

Not by default. It lowers how much you give back and smooths the results, and it caps what a big move can pay. With the same reach rates the two can come out equal or one can win. Test it with your own numbers.

Should I move the stop to break even after TP1?

It removes the chance of losing the original risk on the rest, but a normal pullback can stop you out at entry on trades that would have kept going. The planner holds reach rates fixed, so lower the later ones to see the cost.

What does the reach rate mean?

It is how often you expect price to touch a target after you enter, for example from your own trade log. Each rate must be no higher than the one before it, because a later target cannot be reached without passing the earlier ones.

Why can TP1 then stop still lose money?

If the first part is small or TP1 is close, the profit on that part is less than the loss on the rest at the original stop. The checker flags this case.

How do I split a small position?

You close in steps of 0.01 lot, so a 0.05 lot trade cannot be cut into exact fifths. Use fewer parts, or a position size where the parts come out whole.

Does it work for sell trades?

Yes. Switch to Sell and the stop and targets mirror: the stop goes above the entry and the targets below it. Results are in the same R units.

    Are costs included?

No. Spread, slippage, swap and commission are left out, and each partial close pays its own spread, so more parts means more costs.

    Is my data stored?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent.
