§2 · Sizing

Lot size for a fixed dollar risk

GBPUSD has a $10 pip per lot like EURUSD, but it usually moves further in a day, so stops tend to be wider. Wider stops shrink the lot size you can use for the same dollar risk. This table lets you read the answer without typing anything:

Stop (pips)$50 risk$100 risk$250 risk$500 risk
100.50 lots1.00 lots2.50 lots5.00 lots
150.33 lots0.66 lots1.66 lots3.33 lots
200.25 lots0.50 lots1.25 lots2.50 lots
300.16 lots0.33 lots0.83 lots1.66 lots
400.12 lots0.25 lots0.62 lots1.25 lots
600.08 lots0.16 lots0.41 lots0.83 lots
800.06 lots0.12 lots0.31 lots0.62 lots
1000.05 lots0.10 lots0.25 lots0.50 lots

Read across: a 40-pip stop at a $100 risk allows 0.25 lots. Stretch the stop to 80 pips and the same risk allows 0.12. Same account, same risk, half the position.

§3 · Spread

What the spread costs you

The spread is paid the moment you enter, before price has moved. On GBPUSD it is usually wider than on EURUSD, and it widens around news and at the daily rollover. In dollars on a USD account:

Spread (pips)0.10 lots0.50 lots1.00 lots
0.5$0.50$2.50$5.00
1$1.00$5.00$10.00
1.5$1.50$7.50$15.00
2$2.00$10.00$20.00
3$3.00$15.00$30.00

A 2-pip spread on one lot is $20 you must recover before the trade is even. On a 20-pip stop, that is a tenth of your risk spent on entry.

§4 · Margin

Margin at the 1.3000 example price

Because the pound is worth more than the euro, one GBPUSD lot has a larger position value: $130,000 at 1.3000. Margin is higher than on EURUSD at the same leverage.

Lot size1:301:1001:2001:500
0.10 lots$433.33$130.00$65.00$26.00

§6 · Why Cable

Why Cable asks for more room

The nickname “Cable” comes from the transatlantic telegraph cable that once carried the sterling-dollar rate. Today the pair is known for sharper moves than EURUSD, especially around UK data and Bank of England decisions, so plan for a wider stop and a smaller lot rather than squeezing the same lot into a tighter plan.

If you hold through news, remember that a stop is not a guarantee. Fast markets can fill you beyond your price, so keep the risk percentage low enough to survive an unlucky fill.

Our own tool

A wider stop, sized in advance

On a pair that asks for wider stops, the lot size matters more. Lot Architect shows the size, margin and risk on your MetaTrader chart while you drag the stop, so a wider stop does not turn into a bigger loss.

  • Size by risk %, risk in USD or fixed lots
  • Drag Entry, SL and TP lines on the chart
  • Shows size, margin, risk, reward and R:R
  • MT5 and MT4 versions

Lot Architect is our own product, so we earn money if you buy it. It reads your broker’s specification from the platform. It does not guarantee profits.

Questions

GBPUSD calculator FAQ

What is the pip value of GBPUSD?

$10 per standard lot on a USD account, because the dollar is the quote currency. It does not change with the price.

Why is my lot size smaller than on EURUSD?

Usually because the stop is wider. The pip value is the same, so a wider stop at the same dollar risk means fewer lots.

How much margin does 1 lot of GBPUSD need?

Position value divided by leverage. At 1.3000 and 1:100, one lot needs $1,300. Check your broker’s margin rules, which can differ.

Is the spread included in my stop?

No. The spread is paid on entry. On a long, your stop is hit on the bid, so the spread can make a stop trigger earlier than the chart suggests.

Can I use this for a GBP account?

The numbers on this page are for USD accounts. For a GBP account, divide the dollar pip value by the GBPUSD rate.

Does it include commission?

No. If your account charges commission per lot, add it to the spread cost by hand.
