§2 · Pip cost

What a pip is worth, to the cent

EURUSD is the one pair where the sums stay simple. Because the dollar is the quote currency, one pip on one standard lot is always $10 on a USD account, whatever the price. Multiply by lots and pips and you have the dollar cost of any move.

Lots5 pips10 pips20 pips30 pips50 pips
0.01$0.50$1.00$2.00$3.00$5.00
0.05$2.50$5.00$10.00$15.00$25.00
0.10$5.00$10.00$20.00$30.00$50.00
0.50$25.00$50.00$100.00$150.00$250.00
1.00$50.00$100.00$200.00$300.00$500.00
2.00$100.00$200.00$400.00$600.00$1,000.00
5.00$250.00$500.00$1,000.00$1,500.00$2,500.00

If your account is in euros, the same pip is worth a little less than 10 euros, because ten dollars buys fewer euros as EURUSD rises. The table shows how it shifts:

EURUSD ratePip value, 1 lot (USD)Same pip in EUR
1.05$10.00€9.52
1.10$10.00€9.09
1.15$10.00€8.70
1.20$10.00€8.33
1.25$10.00€8.00
§3 · Margin

Margin changes with the price

Margin is charged on the euro side of the trade, converted to dollars at the current price. At the example price of 1.1000, one lot has a position value of $110,000. The table shows the margin by leverage for a few lot sizes.

Lot size1:301:1001:2001:500
0.10 lots$366.67$110.00$55.00$22.00
0.50 lots$1,833.33$550.00$275.00$110.00
1.00 lots$3,666.67$1,100.00$550.00$220.00
2.00 lots$7,333.33$2,200.00$1,100.00$440.00

Margin is not risk. A position can need little margin and still risk a lot if the stop is wide. Always size from the stop first and read margin second.

§4 · Worked tickets

§5 · Why EURUSD

Why traders start here

EURUSD has long been the most traded currency pair, which usually means deep liquidity and some of the tightest spreads a retail platform offers. That makes it a good pair to learn position sizing on: the pip value does not move, so your only moving parts are the stop and the balance.

The cost of that simplicity is competition. Many traders watch the same levels, so reactions around round numbers and session opens are common. Check our forex market hours tool for when London and New York overlap in your time zone.

Our own tool

Do this sum on the chart

This page works the numbers out in advance. Lot Architect does the same sum on your MetaTrader chart as you drag the Entry and Stop lines, so the lot size follows the stop you actually place.

  • Size by risk %, risk in USD or fixed lots
  • Drag Entry, SL and TP lines on the chart
  • Shows size, margin, risk, reward and R:R
  • MT5 and MT4 versions

Lot Architect is our own product, so we earn money if you buy it. It reads your broker’s specification from the platform. It does not guarantee profits.

Questions

EURUSD calculator FAQ

Is one EURUSD pip always $10?

On a USD account and a standard lot, yes, because the dollar is the quote currency. On a euro or pound account the number differs, as shown in section 2.

How many pips is a 1% stop?

There is no fixed number; it depends on your balance and lot size. Enter your risk and stop above and the calculator tells you the lot size that keeps the loss at your risk percentage.

What is a micro lot on EURUSD?

A micro lot is 0.01 lots, or 1,000 euros. One pip is worth about 10 cents on it.

Why does my broker show a different pip value?

Brokers can quote 5-digit prices and call 0.00001 a point. This page uses 0.0001 as a pip. If your platform uses a different convention, change the pip size under Broker specification.

Does leverage change my risk?

Not the loss at your stop. Leverage changes how much margin is locked, which changes how many positions you can hold and how close you are to a margin call.

How do I check the spread cost?

Type your broker’s typical spread in pips. The ticket multiplies it by your lot size and the pip value.
