XAGUSD contract specification
Silver specifications vary more between brokers than forex pairs do. Treat these as typical values and confirm yours.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Symbol | XAGUSD |
| Base / quote | XAG / USD |
| Contract size, 1 lot | 5,000 troy ounces (typical, verify) |
| Pip used on this page | 0.01 |
| Pip value per lot, USD account | $50.00 per cent |
| Margin formula | lots × 5,000 × price ÷ leverage |
| Smallest lot step | 0.01 at most brokers (verify) |
| Where to confirm | MetaTrader: Market Watch, right-click the symbol, Specification |
| Alternative pip convention | Some platforms call 0.001 a pip, worth $5 per lot |
One lot of silver is not one lot of gold
A standard lot of gold is usually 100 ounces. A standard lot of silver is usually 5,000 ounces. A one-dollar move therefore costs 50 times more on a silver lot than on a gold lot, which surprises traders who carry their gold lot size over:
| Price move per ounce | 1 lot silver (5,000 oz) | 1 lot gold (100 oz) | Silver vs gold |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.10 | $500 | $10 | 50 times |
| $0.25 | $1,250 | $25 | 50 times |
| $0.50 | $2,500 | $50 | 50 times |
| $1.00 | $5,000 | $100 | 50 times |
| $2.00 | $10,000 | $200 | 50 times |
That is why silver lots are small. A trader who risks $100 on a 50-cent stop opens only 0.04 lots. Our XAUUSD lot size calculator does the same sum for gold.
Lot size by stop in cents
On this page a pip is one cent, $0.01 per ounce, worth $50 per lot. The table shows the lot size for a given stop and dollar risk, rounded down to 0.01:
| Stop (cents) | $50 risk | $100 risk | $250 risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 0.05 lots | 0.10 lots | 0.25 lots |
| 30 | 0.03 lots | 0.06 lots | 0.16 lots |
| 50 | 0.02 lots | 0.04 lots | 0.10 lots |
| 75 | 0.01 lots | 0.02 lots | 0.06 lots |
| 100 | 0.01 lots | 0.02 lots | 0.05 lots |
| 150 | 0.00 lots | 0.01 lots | 0.03 lots |
Where a cell reads 0.00 lots, even the smallest lot is too big for that risk. Narrow the stop, raise the risk, or pass on the trade.
Margin at a $40 example price
Position value is lots × 5,000 × price. At $40 an ounce one lot is $200,000 of exposure, so margin at 1:100 is $2,000 per lot. Many brokers offer lower leverage on metals than on forex, so check yours.
| Lot size | 1:20 | 1:50 | 1:100 | 1:200 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 lots | $100.00 | $40.00 | $20.00 | $10.00 |
| 0.05 lots | $500.00 | $200.00 | $100.00 | $50.00 |
| 0.10 lots | $1,000.00 | $400.00 | $200.00 | $100.00 |
| 0.50 lots | $5,000.00 | $2,000.00 | $1,000.00 | $500.00 |
| 1.00 lots | $10,000.00 | $4,000.00 | $2,000.00 | $1,000.00 |
Three tickets at $40.00
Example prices, not live quotes. The first ticket shows the minimum lot warning: when the smallest lot risks more than your budget, the right size is no trade.
Small account
A $15 budget with a 40-cent stop: even the smallest lot risks $20.
Standard
A 50-cent stop, as in the table.
Larger account
Half a percent with a wide stop.
Silver moves more
Silver has typically been more volatile than gold, and moves of several percent in a day can happen. Combine that with a 5,000-ounce lot and the dollar swings are large relative to the account. Start with the smallest lots and the lowest risk percentage you can stand.
Small lots, sized right
With silver, a few cents on the stop changes the lot size a lot. Lot Architect shows size, margin and risk on your MetaTrader chart as you drag the stop, so you do not size silver by feel.
- Size by risk %, risk in USD or fixed lots
- Drag Entry, SL and TP lines on the chart
- Shows size, margin, risk, reward and R:R
- MT5 and MT4 versions

XAGUSD calculator FAQ
What is the contract size of XAGUSD?
Commonly 5,000 troy ounces per lot, but check Specification in MetaTrader. Change the contract size under Broker specification on the ticket if yours differs.
How much is one pip on silver?
On this page a pip is 0.01, one cent per ounce, worth $50 per standard lot. Some platforms treat 0.001 as a pip, which is $5 per lot. The pip size is editable.
Why is the minimum lot so often too big?
A 5,000-ounce lot carries large dollar swings. On a small account, 0.01 lots (50 ounces) can already risk more than 1% with a normal stop.
Is silver margin the same as gold?
No. Margin depends on contract size and price. One silver lot at a $40 price has a $200,000 position value, and leverage rules for metals differ by broker.
Can I trade silver with a small stop?
You can, but spreads on silver are wide compared with the stop. The spread line shows how much of your risk disappears on entry.
Does this include swap and commission?
No. Add them from your broker’s specification. For overnight costs use our swap calculator.
